I laughed when my brother, Daniel Ogunyemi, told us he was launching a podcast called Manhood & Manicures. Being the rock’em sock’em robot Marine, my first thought was: “Oh boy, this will be interesting.”

But I’ve known Daniel his whole life, and if there’s anyone creative, determined (or “defiant” as some may argue😂), and bold enough to make this work, it’s him. And sure enough, Episode 1 completely won me over!

Here’s why men should get manicures:

Daniel and his first guest, Dr. Phil Wagner, didn’t just talk about manicures. They tackled body image, masculinity, stereotypes, and even how these ideas tie into violence. My favorite part was Dr. Phil’s dissertation-based insight on body image and how men’s silence around vulnerability often leads to harm.

The setting—a nail salon—makes it a powerful concept. It’s countercultural, disarming, and symbolic. In a space meant for self-care, Daniel created room for something else: soul care.

That’s why I believe this podcast is more than worth your time. If the first episode is any indication, Manhood & Manicures will be a must-listen for men and for the women who love, support, and lead them. I can see this being a major, life-changing production in the future (remember: you heard it here on Parent-Child-Connect first!).

So here’s my challenge: Watch Episode 1, “The Weight of Manhood with Dr. Phil Wagner,” and then tell me—Should men get manicures? Why or why not? Trust me, I love condescending opinions, so let’s start an open and respectful discussion.

Feel free to comment or send me an email. Let’s start an ongoing discussion surrounding this counterintuitive topic!

While most men won’t get manicures, I think it is ok for men that want to to do so. Self care for one definitely is not the same for another. Men should do whatever gives them peace of mind.
