I’ll be honest: my “imposter syndrome” just got punched in the throat! 😂 In the publishing world, receiving a trade review is the moment of truth. Critics are notoriously tough, and I knew that focusing on leadership fundamentals in my upcoming book, Lead Last, was a bold move. To have Kirkus Reviews describe the work as a “valuable addition to any leader’s library” and a “clearly envisioned primer” is surreal and validates the mission behind this project.

Mastering Leadership Fundamentals Through an “Everyman” Lens

One part of the review that truly resonated with me (and made me chuckle) was the mention of my “Everyman” approach. I believe that leadership fundamentals should be accessible to everyone, which is why I use examples ranging from Microsoft CEOs and Shaquille O’Neal to SpongeBob SquarePants to explain complex concepts like emotional intelligence and the “Emotional Bank Account.”

I’ve always maintained that concepts like emotional intelligence and the “Emotional Bank Account” shouldn’t just be corporate buzzwords anymore. Those timeless concepts should be the building blocks of how we show up for our families and our teams. At Parent-Child Connect, we’ve always believed that leadership is about how you show up for the people who depend on you. I’m glad that my authentic voice (what you see is what you get!) came through so clearly to the critics.

Why the World is Starving for the Fundamentals

The reviewer noted something profound: while some of my tips might seem “rudimentary” or “obvious,” they argued that this reflects the appalling state of contemporary corporate leadership more than a weakness in the book. That was an eye-opening (and frankly flattering) observation!

If you’ve ever felt like your ideas were “too simple” because they focused on basic kindness, structure, and integrity, let this be your sign. The world is actually starving for leadership fundamentals. We don’t need more complex power structures. We need to get back to the basics of prioritizing others’ needs over our own.

Looking Ahead to June 2nd

This review has given our “Lead Last” mission incredible momentum. Whether you are leading a team at work or mentoring the next generation at home, these principles are designed to help you succeed.

I’m incredibly excited for June 2nd. The momentum is building, and I can’t wait to get this book into your hands!
