There was a time when I thought I had all the answers. Like many preteens and teenagers, I went through a phase where I questioned authority and believed I knew more than my dad. I couldn’t wait for an opportunity to prove my independence and, in doing so, often overlooked the quiet, consistent love and wisdom he poured into me. My dad taught me and continues to teach me how to do small things with great love.

I’ve come a long way…

Fast-forward a few years, and I see things differently. My dad is my hero. His sacrifices, his unwavering dedication to his family and community, and his ability to guide and support even when I didn’t recognize I needed it are just a few of the countless reasons I celebrate him today.

I am incredibly grateful that John O’Leary and his Live Inspired team recognized my dad as an On Fire For Good honoree. John’s words capture the essence of my father’s journey—one of resilience, selflessness, and a deep commitment to improving the world.

Who is my dad?

Dr. Olatunde Ogunyemi’s (aka my Dad) story began in Nigeria, where he dared to dream of a brighter future. He traveled over 6,500 miles to the United States, navigated the challenges of adapting to a new culture, and relentlessly pursued education. Today, he stands as a pillar in our community, serving as a professor at Grambling State University for over 35 years, a pastor, a mentor, and a guiding light for so many.

But beyond his academic and professional accolades, my dad’s proudest title isn’t “Doctor.” It’s simply D.A.D. (Well said, John).

John’s article beautifully highlights what I’ve realized: true impact isn’t measured by degrees, titles, or accolades. It’s measured by the love, service, and small yet meaningful actions that shape lives daily. My dad embodies this principle, and I couldn’t be prouder to see him honored in this way.

I invite you to read John O’Leary’s full article and reflect on its powerful message. And as you do, I challenge you to ask yourself: What small act of love can I do today? Because, as my dad has shown me, it’s those small things—done with great love—that genuinely change the world.

Thank you, Dad, for being my hero. And thank you, John O’Leary, for shining a light on a man who has spent his life lifting others up.

With gratitude,

Olaolu Ogunyemi
