I’m excited to join you at the CLA Virtual Conference this Saturday, December 13, 2025! Have you bought your ticket yet?!

As a U.S. Marine Officer, a father, and a leadership coach, I’ve had the opportunity to speak across many platforms about what it truly takes to build the next generation of resilient leaders. My message across every single discussion is clear: True transformation in parenting, leadership, and personal life doesn’t come from a single grand gesture, but from the intentional, consistent repetition of the right fundamentals.

I call this philosophy the One Day, One Rep methodology, and I’ll be breaking it down for you this Saturday. It’s all about creating monumental change through the power of small, sometimes dull, daily actions.

Here’s a sneak peek at how this methodology connects everything I’ve discussed recently:

1. Mastering the “One Day” of Intentional Habits

The foundation of every great leader and resilient child is a non-negotiable commitment to daily intentionality. You cannot pour from an empty cup, and you cannot lead effectively without a plan for your time.

  • Your 10-Minute Rep: I strongly advise every parent and leader to dedicate at least 10 minutes a day to their own physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional well-being. This isn’t a luxury; it’s a non-negotiable daily rep that ensures you have the energy and capacity to pour into your children and your team.
  • Budgeting Time Like Money: I credit my ability to juggle my roles as an active-duty Marine, author, husband, father, leadership coach, and writer to intentionally budgeting my time using a zero-based approach that ensures every day is accounted for and moving toward a purposeful goal. This is how you master the “One Day.”
  • Dream Daily: My D.O.P.E. Framework for fresh starts begins with Dreaming. That means taking 10-20 minutes a day for a low-cognitive activity (like walking) to visualize the desired change in high definition. This small, daily “rep” keeps your vision clear and focused.
  • I talked about these in more detail in two insightful discussions: How to Raise the Next Generation of Leaders: Parenting Advice w/ Olaolu Ogunyemi and Ep 21 – Empowering the Next Generation w/special guest, Olaolu Ogunyemi

2. Executing the “One Rep” of Focused Action

Leadership is not about a rigid system; it’s about adapting to the moment and focusing your energy on the single most effective action, or ” Rep,” that will lead to growth.

  • Building Resilience Through Failure: How do we raise resilient kids? We have to create safe opportunities for them to fail. A complicated chore or a difficult task becomes a decisive teaching moment. It’s a single “rep” where they learn to get comfortable with being uncomfortable and, critically, learn when to ask for help.
  • Discipline as Teaching: Instead of viewing discipline as punishment, I challenge you to view it as a series of intentional “reps” aimed at teaching. The ultimate goal is instilling self-discipline: the ability to do the right thing and apply your teachings even when no one is watching.
  • The Power of Lead Last: My upcoming book, Lead Last, is based on the idea that the best leaders use their “one rep” to make everyone around them better. As a leader, you should be behind your team, pushing their growth forward, and only step forward to take responsibility for mistakes.
  • I talked more about this in these two powerful conversations: Through the Fire #98 – Marine, Author, and Leadership Coach, Olaolu Ogunyemi, and Building Resilient Kids: The Power of Community

3. Focusing on the “ONE” Root Issue

Before taking a “rep,” you must ensure it’s the right rep. This requires empathy and the ability to identify the root cause of the behavior you are observing.

  • Purpose Over Comparison: We must combat the insecurity driven by social media by encouraging our children to focus on their unique purpose, the one thing that makes them smile when no one is watching, rather than comparing their lives to others.
  • Finding the Root Problem: When a child acts out, the root problem is often a simple need for acceptance or attention. The effective “one rep” is not punishment, but stepping into their world, acknowledging their feelings, and addressing the root of their insecurity.
  • The Execution Rep: When using the D.O.P.E. Framework, the final step is Execute. This is the single, crucial “rep” where we stop the “paralysis by analysis” and move into action, even if the plan is only 60–70% complete.
