Let me share a story that reminded me just how true that is.

This moment turned into more than just changing a tire.

One morning, a young Marine was working nervously on his car right outside my office. As I pulled into the lot, I noticed him shifting tools around, clearly unsure of what he was doing—but trying hard to look confident. He seemed tense, probably because of a newly implemented policy prohibiting car repairs in the lot. Marines were instructed to use the on-base auto shop instead.

When he noticed me looking his way, he got even more anxious. I could feel his panic rise the second I stepped out of my vehicle and said, “Hey, Marine…” He shot to his feet with wide eyes before I could finish. I smiled and chuckled, “You’re okay, man. You need some help?”

Relieved, he explained that he’d blown a tire and didn’t want to be late for work. It became obvious he wasn’t sure how to change a tire—and I was excited for the opportunity to help.

What made it even more memorable? He was from my home state and incredibly proud to be a Marine. As we worked, his energy lifted my entire morning. At one point, he grinned and said, “Man, I’m gonna call my mom to tell her I met an officer from Louisiana… That’s awesome!”

His excitement was genuine. That moment has stuck with me ever since.
